Dollar Table signage down

MELVILLE – Melville residents are happy they have gotten rid of Dollar Table bar.

The Dollar Table bar signage has been taken down.

Melville residents have been fighting tooth and nail to have the bar shut down. The battle began when rugby player Thulane Popoyi was hacked to death on 5 October 2014.

“I am not sure who took it down but there have been a lot of calls from residents to have the sign taken down because it is a painful reminder of what happened at that venue,” said Ward 87 councillor Amanda Forsythe.

According to Forsythe, the first victory for the suburb was when the Dollar Table license was cancelled.

“The Melville Resident’s Association and Melville Business Association worked together to make sure the Dollar Table owner doesn’t secure a lease when he tried to rent out space at the former Cool Runnings venue

Residents have taken to social media to share their feelings about this development.

“It took something really awful to bring the community together. Since then, there has been a lot of concerns and ideas being shared within the community,” said Forsythe.

There will be two public meetings in Melville this February. More details about the meetings will be made available in due course informed Forsythe.
