Tips for finding suitable student accommodation

JOHANNESBURG – Safety should be on the top of your list when looking for a place to stay while studying at a tertiary institution.

With school behind them some of the pupils will go and study at a university or campus and this means that some of them may no longer be able to live with their parents and this is where finding accommodation comes in.

“The universities and colleges simply do not have enough accommodation on campus for all their students and it falls on the students and their parents to find a suitable spot for them to live and study for the duration of their tertiary education,” said Craig McMurray, who works with student accommodation.

“Accommodation plays a large role in the success of a student’s tertiary education as this is their primary learning environment after their classes.”

McMurray gave the following tips for parents and students whothat are on the lookout for accommodation:

  • If you are engaging with a landlord that deals with student accommodation check and make sure that they are accredited by the institution you are planning to go to – this will ensure that the rentals are fair and accommodation is suitable.
  • Safety is also an important point as students should feel as safe when they’re in their accommodation as they do when they’re at home, so make sure that the facility has suitable security.
  • Shop around for the best deal, don’t settle for the first flat you see.
  • Look for accommodation that is a close as possible to campus or at very least close to public transport so that you can easily get to the institution every day.
  • The creature comforts make it easier to stay in and study, so the accommodation should include basics such as built-in cupboards, beds and lockers for valuables and a desk.
  • Student life is about more than just studying – it’s about debating the meaning of life and building relationships. Make sure you choose a flat/house that has common areas where students can relax and socialise.

“Keep this list close while you are shopping around for accommodation because it will mean that your child will be living in a safe, secure and nurturing environment that will make it easier for them to achieve the most out of student life,” concluded McMurray.
