UJ accountancy team to compete internationally

AUCKLAND PARK – Representatives of the University of Johannesburg’s accountancy team progress to compete at the 2015 KPMG international case competition.

It’s a big feat for the Department of Accountancy at the University of Johannesburg. The Accountancy@UJ team won the National Round of the 2015 KPMG International Case Competition.

Members of the team Klaus-Peter Göbel, Sicelo Joja, Chad Prins and Rèzanne Neethling will now be presenting South Africa at the International Finals in Dubai during April.

The head at the Department of Accountancy at the University of Johannesburg, Professor Alex van der Watt had the following to say about the team’s success, “The Department of Accountancy is proud of this great achievement by our students. It is also testimony to the dedication and hard work of lecturers in developing well-rounded individuals with the capacity to become business leaders of the future. We truly believe that these four students will be proud ambassadors for both KPMG and UJ in representing South Africa in Dubai next year.”

At the 2015 KPMG international competition, the UJ finalists will be asked to provide strategic advice to a global oil and gas company embarking on a new shale gas operation. The judges evaluated teams on their levels of insight, innovation and enthusiasm.

During every stage of the competition, each team will be given a detailed case study to consider – then it’s up to the team to

tackle these issues. For each round of the competition, the participating teams will be given three hours to carefully review the dossier they have been given to identify and analyse the key business issues in order to develop a compelling set of recommendations and to prepare an engaging presentation

for the judges.

The UJ team will then present their ideas to a panel of experienced KPMG firm’s partners and leaders. The judges will listen to

the presentations and will expect the teams to deliver a professional presentation. A series of challenging questions will be posed to them. If the team fares well they will advance through the next rounds of competition and will have the opportunity to become the next KPMG International Case Competition World Champions.
