Joburg not in World’s most violent cities list

METRO – Cape Town, Durban and Nelson Mandela Bay are in the top 50 list of the world’s most violent cities.

Although South African crime statistics ranked Johannesburg as one of the most perilous cities in the country, the city of gold did not make it into the list of 50 most violent cities in the world.

In a study done by Mexico’s Citizens’ Council for Public Security and Criminal Justice recently Johannesburg is less violent compared to Cape Town, Durban and Nelson Mandela Bay.

In this list, Durban was number 48 with 32.42 homicides per 100 000 residents.

Nelson Mandela Bay followed at number 46 with 35.76 homicides per 100 000 residents.

On the other hand, the mother city Cape Town seats at number 20 with 50.94 homicides per 100 000 residents.

The most violent city in the world according to the study is San Pedro Sula in Honduras with 187.14 homicides per 100 000 residents.

Countries such as Mexico, Brazil, Guatemala and Columbia had cities in the top ten of the list.

34 of the 50 worst cities were located in Latin America.

The ranking does not count deaths in war zones or cities with unavailable data.
