Use social media responsibly

VICTORY PARK – King Davids pupils had some lessons to learn when social media law specialist Emma Sadleir gave a talk on using social media responsibly.

King David Victory Park High and Primary Schools were privileged to host the renowned speaker Emma Sadleir.

Sadleir is an admitted attorney specialising in social media law.

“Emma spoke on the responsible use of social media, its legal implications, and the dangers we and our children face when using social media,” said school counsellor Gita Lipschitz.

Sadleir’s talk covered the social media landscape in South Africa, as well as defamation, privacy and hate speech.

“More importantly, Emma explored the damage that sexting, cyber bullying and pornography can do to our students’ personal reputation. Any inappropriate photos or text that we post on social platforms such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram can compromise potential scholarships, admission to university and future employment,” Lipschitz said.

Parents were urged to tell their children not to post anything on line that they would not want the four Ps to see, their Parents, their Principal, the Police or a Predator.

“She cited many cases of people who were expelled or fired as a result of a prank that seemed funny at the time, was ‘deleted’ and then surfaced sometime later. Your digital footprint is out there in cyber space, protect it and manage it well.”
