Northcliff high honours top achievers

NORTHCLIFF– Northcliff High School head girl Bela Gomes is one of the four pupils that received white blazers after her outstanding academic and leadership performance that saw her being the first pupil to receive a Magna Cum Laude in 16 years.

Northcliff High School recently honoured four pupils as top achievers.

Head girl Bela Gomes, Jarrad Rocher, Sarah Weirich and Nina-Rose Tidy received their white honours blazers for their outstanding achievements.

Grade 11 pupil Rocher received full colours for swimming, squash and hockey.

“It is exciting because ever since I got my blazer even people in lower grades talk to me and are proud of me. I have always worked hard on my sport because I knew I wanted the white blazer,” said Rocher.

As a result of his robust guidance, the school was awarded the Top Schools Award in Squash for the first time in history.

Tidy, another 11th grader, received her full colours for academics, dramatics and athletics.

“It is rewarding for me to get recognition for drama and athletics because I spent most of my time working hard on those,” she said.

She added that she took part in the English Olympiad which helped her receive academic colours.

“If you are in the top 50 of the Olympiad you don’t have to wait till the end of the year to get academic colours, so I was very happy,” said Tidy.

According to Tidy, pupils have to work hard from the beginning of the year to obtain this honour.

Grade 12 pupil Weirich also received full colours for academics, dramatics and rhetoric.

“When I came to Northcliff High in Grade 8 I set myself a goal that by the end of matric I should have obtained my white blazer, so I got myself involved in as much as possible. At the end of the day, hard work pays,” said Weirich.

Northcliff High School head girl Gomes received the first magna cum laude in 16 years.

Her award is the highest accolade obtainable at Northcliff High School.

“I am humbled to receive such an award. It hasn’t happened in so long and I thought they didn’t give it anymore,” said Gomes, the only red tie holder of the school.

Gomes intends to study medicine at the University of Pretoria.

Northcliff High School media liaison Lizl Thorne said each pupil can obtain a white blazer if they achieve full colours in three different fields.

“It is not easy because the pupil will have to work hard in three different areas and we are proud of these four,” said Thorne.
