Luke Tibbets’ accused walks free

WESTBURY - Luke Tibbets's accused released after paying a R3 000 fine.

One of the suspects originally arrested in connection with little Luke Tibbets’ (3) murder, Keenan Mokwena, was released after he had paid a fine of R3 000. Mokwena was wounded in the arm during the shooting incident in August in Westbury. He pleaded guilty for pointing a gun and was sentenced by the Newlands District Court on 31 October to 12 months in jail or a R3 000 fine. He chose to pay the fine, according to Warrant Officer Gordon Billing.

“This is not right at all,” said the late Luke’s grandmother Elaine Petersen.

Petersen informed that she doesn’t feel like justice has been served.

“My grandson felt pain, we also want people who were responsible for his death to feel the same pain, hearing that he (Mokena) is on the street doesn’t make sense at all,” she said.

Earlier this year, Gauteng Premier David Makhura made a surprise visit to the Sophiatown Police Station and advised the community not to take matters into their own hands, and that justice will be served.

Meanwhile, murder accused Lindray Khakhu – who allegedly fired the bullet that claimed Luke’s life – is expected to go on trial early next year.
