Church walks for organs

PARKVIEW – ChurchAlive members complete the Save 7 Lives Walk at Johannesburg Zoo.

Four young adult members of ChurchAlive, Northcliff, proved on 25 October that they are wild at heart. They completed the Save 7 Lives Walk at Johannesburg Zoo, Parkview, in support of the Organ Donor Foundation of South Africa. The foundation claims on its website that it needs urgent funds for the foundation’s emergency flight fund to fetch organs from distant places, organ referrals education for emergency rooms, and the foundation’s public awareness initiative to raise more registered organ donors.

The group walked around the zoo admiring the animals, glad in the knowledge that they were also supporting a good cause. “My favourite part was seeing the monkeys swinging around, that was pretty cool,” said Ivor Donda. “I was impressed by their agility.” The other three, Maxine Hulett, Anelle Mostert and Tyron Tewson, agreed that their favourite part was going through the Animals of the Amazon building, formed as an Aztec temple.

ChurchAlive Senior Pastor Johan Minnaar said, “As a 21st century church, the people of Church Alive have become more aware of their responsibility toward community upliftment and development (in our case, specifically focused on education).” He added that the church intends to express its beliefs by more practical means, and when an opportunity like the Save 7 Lives Walk is presented, the church “should be able to step up to the challenge to ‘love your neighbour’, and decide that maybe we can do something, for somebody.”
