Meyiwa’s murder was not a contract killing – Riah Phiyega

PARKTOWN – The reward for information which would lead to the arrest and conviction of those involved in the murder of Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates goal keeper has been increased from R150 000 to R250 000.

National Police Commissioner Riah Phiyega addressed the media after the death of Bafana Bafana captain and Orlando Pirates goal keeper Senzo Meyiwa on 27 October.

Phiyega informed that the 27-year-old was shot in the upper body while he and his friends were at the home of girlfriend Kelly Khumalo in Vosloorus in Ekurhuleni.

Two men had entered the home and demanded a cellphone, while a third suspect remained outside, she said.

One cellphone was taken during the robbery.

Phiyega further added that, “The cell phone did not belong to the deceased, the suspects took it while it was on a charger.”

Meyiwa died on arrival at the hospital.

Speaking at the media briefing, Phiyega gave the description of the suspects.

Two suspects are believed to be in their late twenties and one in his early thirties.

One suspect is tall, dark-skinned, slender and dreadlocked, and the second suspect is also dark-skinned, short and well-built, she said. The third suspect’s (who remained outside) description was unavailable.

The reward for information which would lead to the arrest and conviction of those involved has been increased from R150 000 to R250 000.

Phiyega told reporters that there is no preferential treatment in terms of how they deal with rewards.

A multi-disciplinary task team has been established to investigate the murder of Meyiwa.

She also stated that there is no evidence that the murder was a contract killing.

Reports that Meyiwa was shot while trying to save Khumalo were dismissed, as Meyiwa was walking toward the door when the shooting occurred.
