Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates captain and goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa was shot dead on Sunday night, allegedly at girlfriend and musician Kelly Khumalo’s home in Vosloorus.

The South African Police Service confirmed on its Twitter page that the 27-year-old was declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

“No one present in the house was hurt… We can assure all South Africans that we will do all we can to bring Meyiwa’s killers book (sic),” the police tweeted.

It was reported that there were seven people in Khumalo’s home and Meyiwa was shot shortly after an altercation. The suspects fled on foot.

Police are offering a R150 000 reward for any information that can assist with the investigation.

After the news broke, Meyiwa’s death became the trending topic on Twitter, with expressions of shock and sadness streaming in from South Africans.

Former teammate and current KV Oostende (Belgian League) player Andile Jali was beside himself after hearing the news.

Jali had just spoken to Meyiwa on the phone earlier on Sunday.

Meyiwa’s death was a second blow to the sports industry, just days after former 800-metre athletics world champion Mbulaeni Mulaudzi was killed in a car crash on Friday 24 October.
