Eefeeus Oord Old Age Home women get their groove back

MELVILLE – Eeufees Old Age Home residents prove that hair is the richest ornament of women.

Jenny Stevens of Hair, a hair salon in Melville, recently embarked on a monthly project to give back to the community.

Once a month, Stevens invites senior citizens from the Eeufees Oord Old Age Home in Westdene to come for free hairdos.

“I wanted to do something to give back to the community and what better way to do so than to take care of the old people close to us,” comments Stevens.

Stevens picks up these residents as early as 7am and drops them off after giving them new looks.

During this process, the elderly non-paying clients receive scrumptious muffins, tea and coffee for their delight.

It was the second free salon visit for 72-year-old Mavis Hamer.

“Coming here makes us feel young and sexy,” she says, enthusiastically moving her hips and flaunting her new short tinted hairstyle.

“This is very beneficial to us because they treat us with so much dignity. The salon makes us feel like we have been on holiday… All old people look forward to coming here,” says Jenny Heuvel.

Cathy Swanepoel who has been residing at the old-age home for three years says, “The salon employees are so friendly and they put smiles on our faces because we feel at home because it is a good way to get away from our old-age home.”

Zoi Coufadis, on the other hand, says she feels like a new person.

“I normally brush my hair back and this is something beautiful and different. I am very excited to come out because I am usually at home without much to do. We feel very special.”

Stevens hopes to give a treat to all Eeufees Oord residents.

“Some of the old people cannot come because it is not easy for them to get into the car, so we will start going to the old-age home and do their hair in their comfort zones,” she concludes.
