Curtains down for ‘Generations’

AUCKLAND PARK- Sepedi show Skeem Saam is replacing Generations for now, awaiting it’s not so anticipated return.

Fans watched Generations’s final episode on 30 September ahead of a two-month break.

The SABC has assured viewers its popular soapie will be back on air in December.

The corporation announced earlier this month that it would stop the soapie while new episodes are filmed with a brand-new cast.

Sixteen cast members were axed on 18 August subsequent to boycotting work as a result of a wage dispute.

The stand-off between the disgruntled actors and the programme’s production company ended in a stalemate.

“We want the people of South Africa to continue watching and support our local content,” said SABC’s Kaizer Kganyago.

Sepedi show Skeem Saam is replacing Generations for now, awaiting its not so anticipated return.

While executive producer Mfundi Vundla and his team work to record new episodes, the fired actors have approached the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) in an effort to get their jobs back.

Thato Molamu, who used to play Nicholas, said he never dreamed of the end of the show when he spoke to ENCA.

“Nobody ever went back and called the production company asking for their jobs back, it was the other way round…they asked some actors to come back and tried to divide us… the magnificent 16 is saying if there is no change we will not come back…,”said Molamu.

Molamu believes this fight is a win for them and is a fight for all actors in the industry.

“It is not a loss, it is a loss to the producer because he started something so great but now it is coming to an end,” he said.

On the show’s Facebook Page, it was posted “Starting Monday 5 October, you can enter our sensational online competition and stand a chance at winning an appearance on the new Generations. An opportunity for the fans, the winner chosen by the fans! Don’t miss out on the fun”.

As the curtain went down on the oldest show in the country, there was a wide range of emotions among viewers, mostly rage.

Buntu Nkungu responded, “The audience is now going to act, you wish! For acting, you need to go to relevant schools and achieve qualifications, you can’t just jump into acting unless that is not a real thing”.

Beyanda Menti said “What the f….Vundla we enjoy Generations, we don’t want a new one so u better change the name as well.”
