Six injured in truck accident

HONEYDEW - Truck rolls on a notorious intersection on Christiaan de Wet Road.

One man sustained critical injuries after a truck he was travelling in overturned on the intersection of Paul Kruger and Christiaan de Wet roads in Honeydew.

It is understood that the Pikitup truck driver lost control of the vehicle as he was trying to turn into Christiaan de Wet travelling from Scott Avenue, which caused the truck to overturn and land on its side.

Five of the other occupants, including the driver, sustained injuries ranging from minor to moderate.

The man, who suffered critical injuries, was trapped in the vehicle for close to 45 minutes with his leg under the vehicle.

City Of Johannesburg Emergency Services used Jaws of Life to free the patient in a 45-minute rescue attempt. Once the patient was freed, paramedics provided advanced life support before transporting him to Olivedale Hospital for urgent medical treatment.

The remaining five patients were treated for their injuries and transported to Olivedale Hospital for further observation.

The intersection where the accident occurred is known to be notorious by motorists who use it frequently. “There is a minimum of three accidents every weekend on this intersection,” said Lizzy Malatsi, who says she is a regular user of this road. In the past few weeks, the traffic lights at this intersection were not working. Most residents blamed the non-functional traffic lights to be the cause of accidents, but on the day that this accident occurred, the traffic lights were working. “If you look at it properly, if we as motorists watched our speed, some of these accidents can be avoidable,” concluded Marius van der Walt who was one of the bystanders at the accident scene.
