Water restoration still uncertain

JOBURG – Rand Water says it cannot predict when water will be fully restored in affected areas.

It has been six days since a major water supply interruption hit parts of Joburg on 15 September, and some areas are still without water.

Not only that, but residents in some of the affected areas can expect no access to water tanks.

Joburg Water spokesperson Millicent Kabwe said because a large area is affected, they cannot make water tanks available to everyone.

She said, “Rand Water is currently experiencing problems at their pump station so unfortunately we cannot inform people when the water will be restored”.

Rand Water media relations manager Justice Mohale said the current situation is “very bad” and he cannot commit to a prediction of when normal supply will be restored.

“Rand Water is still experiencing serious water shortage as a result of increasing demand and soaring temperatures in the Gauteng Province,” he said in a statement released today.

“The situation has been exacerbated by the electricity supply outage on Monday (15 September) at the Eikenhof pumping station,” he added.

Mohale said Rand Water has been battling to fill up some of its reservoirs since the power outage.

“It became difficult for the water levels to stabilise as the demand always increased during the peak period when most people would be back from work,” he explained.

Kabwe and Mohale appealed to residents in affected areas to use water sparingly, as the water supply to reservoirs and tanks  is currently running slow.
