Statistics South Africa is ready to embark on their National Living Conditions Survey which will start from September until October 2015.
The periodic survey, which is done every five years, aims to identify and profile poverty in the country.
This will also give policy-makers information on who is poor and where the poor are located and what it is that drives poverty in the country.
According to Statistic South Africa’s field operation manager Thabo Manchidi, Gauteng Province has approximately 75 field workers and 562 sampling units.
How will the information benefit the country? “The information collected is also used to update the Consumer Price Index basket of goods and services which is used to track inflation,” shared Manchidi.
He further stated that the information would be used for the public to be updated about the progress of poverty index and to see if there is anything lacking.
How the information will be collected:
- The information will be collected for a period of 12 months.
- The information will be collected, using a questionnaire consisting of four modules, as well as two weekly diaries which will capture household expenditure and acquisitions.
- To ensure the safety of residents, the field workers will carry, Stats SA identity card that contains the photograph, name and ID number of the staff member.
- All field staff will be wearing Stats SA branded clothing, which will make them easily identifiable.
- If resident are not certain about the field workers, the provincial field operations manager Manchidi can be contacted to verify if the person at their door is a Stats SA staff member.
- They will have the details of all staff members, vehicle registration numbers, and also the areas in which the staff member is supposed to be working.
