Liewe Heksie’s ‘mum’ dies

BRIXTON - 'Liewe Heksie's' creator and '7de Laan' director Verna Vels has passed away in her sleep. The story of Liewe Heksie comes to an end.

Verna Vels, the creator of the iconic Afrikaans TV- and -book character Liewe Heksie has died at the age of 81.

She passed away peacefully in her sleep at her house in Brixton.

Vels was the first woman who was appointed as a programme director at the SABC. She also lent her voice to some of children’s TV’s most beloved characters – Wielie Walie’s Bennie Boekwurm and Haasdas se Nuuskas.

Until recently, she was involved in directing popular soapie 7de Laan.

Vels was allegedly suffering from breast cancer, and the disease had spread to her brain.
