German fans celebrate World Cup win

MILPARK - Fans celebrated victory of the world cup at the Deutsche International Schule on 13 July.

The 2014 Brazil World Cup might be over, but it certainly won’t be forgotten by these footie fans.

Over a thousand supporters waited in anticipation at the German School’s public viewing in Milpark for the world cup final between Argentina and Germany on 13 July.

And when the two giants collided, Germany’s Mario Gotze found the back of the net on the 113 minutes beating Argentina 1- 0.

According to DJS’ public relations manager Savo Ceprnich, the final was well supported and people actually had to be turned away.

The money raised from ticket sales, food, drinks and donations would go towards paying for the school’s U14 soccer team to visit Germany next year.

The atmosphere at the public viewing was exhilarating. Fans rocked up on their team’s national jerseys, and some fans were brave enough to paint their faces with German colours.

During the game, he remembers, there was tension.

“There were a number of people who could not bear to watch certain parts of the match because Argentina looked more and more likely to win,” explained Ceprnich.

He added, there was a great sense of relief and it did not take long for the celebrations to begin when the mighty Germans won.

“There was a flurry of emotions after the win….A lot of the older German fans had tears in their eyes and for many of today’s younger generation it was the first time they could enjoy a German World Cup victory,” Ceprnich recounted with Nostalgia.

And yes, there was a great sense of expectation.

“The atmosphere was electric, because Germany had not won the World Cup since its unification – There was a great party atmosphere after the game as every German fan celebrated the success.”

As for the Argentina fans who joined in the public viewing, they were naturally disappointed by the results, however, Ceprnich informed they held their heads high despite the loss.

“The World Cup was generally very exciting. I think that watching this World Cup brought back plenty positive and happy memories from when we [South Africa] hosted the event 4 years ago….We hope that our visitors enjoyed themselves at our school and were able to taste some German culture along the way,” he concluded.
