Turning carpet-laying into an art

MELVILLE - You thought floor-laying was only about carpets and glue?

Learners at Sparrow Schools Melville will be walking on air from now on. Or at least, after Friday 13 June they’ll be walking on Belgotex industrial floor coverings.

Sparrow College’s floor-laying students fitted a carpet at their sister school on this auspicious date. The 50 students studying installation of floor coverings at the NQF level had real life experience, carpeting a full-size room for a real client. This fitment was incorporated into their modules as part of their practical training.

The students had the privilege of spending the whole day with field expert Desmond Paul, training manager at Belgotex. Paul took his time to mentor the students during the process.

“There’s more to floor-laying than carpets and glue. There’s measurements, fitting the underfelt, iron pressing and carpet stretching,” Paul said.

For the students, this was valuable life experience and a taste of what to expect in the real world.
