Goals galore on day two

JOBURG – 11 goals scored on day two of world cup, residents comment.

11 goals were scored on day two of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, 13 and 14 June, with the shock result of Netherlands beating champions Spain 5 – 1.

The night began with Mexico beating Cameroon 1 – 0, in group A, thanks to Peralta scoring in the 61st minute following goalkeeper Itanje blocking a shot from Dos Santos.

Netherlands then brought Spain to their knees, being the first team to score more than four goals against them since 1963. This despite only securing 43 percent possession.

Xabi Alonso put Spain ahead in the group B encounter with a penalty in the 27th minutes, but then it all went orange.

Van Persie headed the equaliser in the 44th minute, Robben scored the Dutch’s second, helped by a deflection, in the 53rd minute, de Vrij scored in the 65th minute after a Sneijder free kick bounced back off the post, van Persie seized upon a goalkeeper error to score in the 72nd minute, and Robben put one in for extra measure, running around keeper Casillas in the 80th minute.

Chile then beat Australia 3 – 1 in a group B encounter.

Sanches scored for Chile in the 12th minute, finishing after scrappy play, and Valdiva lobbed the Aussie keeper in the 14th minute putting the South Americans two ahead.

Tim Cahill gave the Aussies hope, heading one in in the 35th minute, but two minutes into additional time Beausejour shot one in from the edge of the box to seal an important win.

Residents comments on Twitter:

@ZigZee: “My team is officially Spain… because I drew them at work today so if they win I win the purse :) :) #jozikicks #WorldCup”

@NicholasZaal: “A pity about Cameroon. I really hope that the African teams will do well in this world cup. Next game, go Netherlands #jozikicks”

@rickmarais: “Goal of the match so far! Van Persie, what a player!! #jozikicks”

Spokesperson for Randburg Football Club Marlon Abrahams saidin his personal view Netherlands are the third most likely team to win the world cup. This is because Netherlands have played more finals than any other team without winning, and manager Louis van Gaal failed to qualify for the world cup in 2002, and so “has a score to settle” and “has what it takes”.
