Mothiba appointed as new Gauteng police commisioner

JOBURG – Gauteng has officially been assigned a provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Lesetja Joel Mothiba.

Lieutenant General Lesetja Mothiba has been appointed the new Gauteng Provincial Commissioner of South African Police Service (SAPS).

This was announced by the National Commissioner of  SAPS General Riah Phiyega at a media briefing on 4 June.

Phiyega said those who know Mothiba will confirm that he is a very competent, experienced and skilled leader who is well-suited to lead Gauteng.

“Lieutenant General Mothiba brings with him over 30 years of experience to the position, having gone up the ranks within the SAPS since joining the police in 1982; the latest being the Divisional Commissioner responsible for Visible Policing,” Phiyega said.

“Amongst some of his duties, he was tasked with enhancing visible policing as a key function of the SAPS, ensuring effective administration of the provisions of the Firearms Control Act, the monitoring and evaluation of policies, strategies, standards and guidelines of the Police Emergency Services as well as the prevention and combatting of crime in the railway environment.”

Mothiba served as commander for seven years at the Alexandra Police Station, six years at the helm of Human Resource Development and the last four years as the Divisional Commissioner for Visible Policing.

Mothiba’s academic record boasts a National Diploma in Police Administration (1989), a Bachelor’s Degree in Police Science (1994) and a BA Honours Degree (1997).

He is currently studying towards his Master’s Degree in Policing.

Phiyega expressed her’s and the SAPS management team’s confidence that Lieutenant General Mothiba is the right person to lead the SAPS in Gauteng.

“He has been acting in this role for some time and I know that he will continue to receive the full support of the local and national management team as they continue to work hard to make Gauteng safer. Congratulations General Mothiba. We wish you everything of the best.”

Mothiba was appointed as acting Gauteng Provincial Commissioner last year when Bethuel Zuma was relieved of his duties just eight hours after he was appointed as commissioner.
