Mayor reports on service delivery in the City of Johannesburg

JOBURG - Executive Mayor Councillor Mpho Parks Tau reflects on what the ANC government has managed to achieve in the City of Johannesburg.

Executive Mayor councillor Mpho Parks Tau recently reflected on the positive strides that the City of Johannesburg has accomplished.

Tau said service delivery remains the highest priority of the ANC in line with their mandate to make Johannesburg a better place. Among the major achievements of the city during the 2012/13 financial year are:

-3 307 households received first-time electricity connected and 5 343 new public lights were installed.

-Johannesburg’s clean drinking water level remains the highest in the country receiving an unprecedented 99.9 percent as measured by the Department of Water Affairs.

-Waste management services have improved; 94 percent of households now benefit from multiple days per week removal by Pikitup and the remaining six percent is service on a one-day service per week.

-Rea Vaya carries almost 36 000 passengers every day. The first two phases of Rea Vaya BRT have been completed and the next stage will see the integration of the bus system with other modes of transport. Three large interchanges will be built in Sandton, Westgate and Pan Africa in Alexandra to enable passengers to transfer between Rea Vaya, Gautrain, commuter rail, Metrobus, mini bus and metered taxi modes.

-27 091 solar water heaters were installed in Alexandra as part of a comprehensive programme to move toward energy efficient power source. The business sector and private developments are also encouraged to follow the city’s example in saving electricity usage.

-90 000 tonnes of dry waste and over 80 000 tonnes of green waste were diverted from the city’s over-stretched landfill sites.

-Gravel roads were upgraded to surface standards in Bram Fischerville, Diepkloof, Ivory Park and Orange Farm and designs were drafted for the rehabilitation of Naledi Bridge, New Canada and Emmarentia Dam.

More than R100 billion is being invested over 10 years in strategic economic infrastructure. This will strengthen Johannesburg’s position as Africa’s leading investment and commercial hub and signal that “the City is open for business”.

The City is investing more than R100 billion in strategic infrastructures over a 10-year period.
