Get creative with the Collect-a-Can competition

JOBURG- Collect a can competition is officially kicking off on 1 June.

South Africa has hope for the environment.

Collect-a-can campaign aims to challenge school pupils to build the most creative structures from 300 or more used cans in a competition that kicks off on 1 June. This amazing initiative is to improve and educate the way learners view things.

“Creativity could turn unpleasant and unhealthy litter into an opportunity for schools to win their share of R60 000 in the annual Collect-a-Can Craze competition, while also encouraging learners to be more eco-conscious,” account manager Annette Jansen van Rensburg said in a statement.

Last year, pupils captivated and enthralled the judges with their creative designs, however, this year the judges will be lapping it and begging for more.

Jansen van Rensburg said the competition is a way of educating pupils about the value of things.

“The competition is aimed to encourage and educate pupils not to be wasteful.”

Zimasa Velaphi, public relations and marketing manager of Collect-a-Can, reckons the competition encourages pupils to think outside the can.

“We want pupils to realise that there is more to used cans than trash, cans represent opportunity,” Velaphi explained.

Jansen van Rensburg informed that the structures can take any form and advised pupils to let their imagination run wild.

“What may seem like trash, can be a valuable tool that can be re-used in their artwork and then recycled, which protects the environment by prolonging the lifespan of the raw materials and preserving natural resources as well as energy,” she added.

Participants are encouraged to collect their own cans for their creative artwork which will be recovered by Collect-a-Can.

They are also urged to submit photographs of the structures to Collect-a-Can along with a completed entry form which is now available at Collect-a-Can branches and on its website.

The winning structure will receive R30 000, second place R20 000 and third place R10 000.

Hopeful schools across the country are encouraged to enter the competition. The winners will be determined by Collect-a-Can judges.
