Art competition to host info sessions

AUCKLAND PARK - South Africa's longest standing art competition, Sasol New Signatures is underway, and artists have begun to prepare their submissions.

JOBURG – South Africa’s longest standing art competition, Sasol New Signatures is underway, and artists have begun to prepare their submissions.

To help guide potential entrants through the competition, chairman Peter Binsbergen announced the commencement of information sessions around the country.

The information sessions serve as a tutorial on how to prepare entries for consideration, provide useful insight into the judging process, and guide potential entrants on conceptualisation, display techniques and presentation of work.

“The competition has established itself as a distinctive competition, providing a reputable platform to advance the country’s emerging talent,” said Sasol sponsorship manager Richard Hughes.

“At Sasol, we believe that the arts form one of the biggest platforms of expression, and we are privileged to have been a part of this competition over the past 25 years.”

The competition is open to artists who are 18 years and older, and who have not held a solo exhibition (a body of at least 20 works exhibited in a commercial gallery), except for academic purposes.

The winner will receive a R100 000 cash prize and a solo exhibition at the Pretoria Arts Museum next year.

The runner up will receive a cash prize of R25 000, and the five merit winners will each receive R10 000.

The Johannesburg information sessions will take place on 19 May at Artist Proof Studio, The Bag Factory, 3 President Street, Newtown at 11am, and on 21 May at the Fada (Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture) Building, University of Johannesburg, Bunting Road Campus, Auckland Park, at 11am.

Information sessions will also be held in Pretoria, Bloemfontein and Durban.

Booking is essential.
