A West(dene) side story

WESTDENE - Reasidents came out in numbers to take part in the 5km Family Fun Walk.

The 5km Family Fun Walk was the event to attend as more than 150 Westdene residents and pets came out to participate on 6 April.

Walkers had themselves a great time as they strolled through parts of Westdene and across many of the University of Johannesburg’s (UJ) sports fields and scenic trails.

The Westdene Residents Association hosted the event, in partnership with fitness studio Ignition Health, and was greatly supported by the UJ.

Ignition Health’s Leslie Longueira was impressed with the level of participation.

“It was great to see so many people taking part and making the event such a success. We thank them all for participating,” Longueira said.

“Walking can be a fun and healthy way to burn off a few extra calories and we hope this will be the first of what will become an annual event for Westdene,” she added.

Secretary of the residents’ association, Jean Knight, said the aim of the event was to share the spirit of walking with friends and family members.

Knight thanked the sponsors who generously donated the prizes, UJ students who were marshals, and Metro police officers for their support.

“We would like to thank UJ for taking us on some delightful trails that many of us have never walked before,” Knight stated.

“We are also pleased that the proceeds from the event will be donated to the Friends of Melville Koppies in recognition of the year-round conservation work they undertake on a voluntary basis to protect and preserve the 100-hectare natural wonder of the West Koppies in Westdene, with its 3-billion-year-old ridges. Their dedication to preserving this great asset to our suburb is truly remarkable,” Knight expressed.

The event ended off with participants signing a sheet of honour and an unexpected Easter egg hunt for the children who participated in the walk.

The Westdene Family Fun Walk was sponsored by Aqua Water, Cube Route – Eukanuba, Dream Nails Beauty Campus Square, Ignition Health Westdene, Melville Wellness Centre and Day Spa, as well as Melville Spar Supermarket.
