OPINION: Choosing security measures

Choosing the right security measures can be tricky, especially without adequate knowledge of how criminals operate.

Ideally, the best security measures work best both in the presence and absence of people. Defence in Depth means relying on multiple security measures for a single asset or person. Of course, most security measures tend to fail time and again. This is largely due to criminals getting smarter.

Owners of premises need to maximize security by ensuring that their yard is difficult to get through. The fence or wall is the first line of defence and it works best without holes and the like.

The house must be secured as best as possible to limit breaching, by installing door chains, intercoms or whatever else your home needs – all security measures should be tailor-made according to the layout of your home. To eliminate vulnerability ensure these countermeasures (locks, chains, alarms, lights) are properly maintained. Think like a criminal and fix what is compromised. Criminals will exploit weaknesses.

Getting to know neighbours is important. Discuss security issues and concerns to eliminate any weak links. Don’t ever forget – criminals study habits.

It would be helpful to learn about the types of criminals found in a particular area. Criminal statistics can be found on the internet or at the nearest police station. If an area is prone to armed robberies etcetera, then there will be need for smarter security.

There is no universal way of ensuring security. It’s all dependent upon the area and general habits of a person. Criminals tend to favour the element of surprise. Do not be caught off-guard. Know the criminals and test your security measures.
