The Do’s and Don’t’s of rainy weather

JOBURG - Gloomy weather will abate over weekend, but until then, be cautious.

Recent torrential rains around Gauteng have taken their toll on motorists and roads alike. The good news is that it may just subside in time for the weekend.

“A moist airmass associated with tropically-sourced air is expected to remain in circulation until Thursday,” the South African Weather Service said in a statement, adding that it was expected to clear up by Friday.

Saturday’s forecast is set to be mostly sunny, with a slight chance of thunderstorms in and around Gauteng.

The weather service has given the following precautionary flooding tips, just in case the rains continue through the weekend:

  •  If at all possible, stay indoors and off roads.
  • Avoid crossing rivers and swollen streams where water is above your ankles when walking outdoors. The current of fast-moving flood water of a depth of 15cm is strong enough to knock a person off their feet. The current of 60cm deep water is strong enough to float a car.
  • Never try to walk, swim or drive through fast-moving flood water. Stop, turn around and go another way.
  • Listen to the special warnings on radio and/or television.
  • Abandon your home immediately if evacuation is recommended, before access is cut off by flood water.
  • Never drive into water covering the road. You would not know how deep it is or if the road has been washed away.
  • If the vehicle stalls, leave it immediately and seek higher ground.
  • Be especially cautious at night when it’s harder to recognise flood dangers.
