If Linden trees could speak

LINDEN - Dehan Liebenberg planted and nurtures 100 trees as his contribution to the Linden community.

If Linden trees could speak, they would offer testamony to the companions that Dehan Liebenberg has given them. The estate agent is an avid tree planter and more than three years ago, he embarked on a campaign called The Green Linden Campaign, which saw him plant 100 indigenous trees in three years.

“I spend a lot of time in the suburb as I am most fortunate to sell houses here, and was inspired to start this campaign as a means of giving back to the suburb and the people of Linden,” said Liebenberg.

“We as estate agents make our living out of the very suburb we work in, put our pointer boards on the street corners and signage on pavements. I believe it’s appropriate to give something back and thought this would be a good way to do so,” he added.

Liebenberg’s trees, which he likens to his babies, are strategically scattered on Linden’s pavements with green tags tied to their stems to indicate the type of tree.

These include White Stinkwood, River Bush Willow, White Karee and Mountain Karee species.

Liebenberg used the tags as an opportunity to impart the 10-year knowledge he gained while studying trees by indicating the type of tree planted.

Sponsored by Pam Golding Properties and with the help of his gardener Simon Nkhoma, the former Linden and current Roosevelt Park resident is appeased by the growth of the trees and the resident’s reception.

“The suburb of Linden has wholeheartedly embraced the campaign, and it gives me great pleasure to see people tending their trees and helping us with the watering in the hot spring, before the rain arrives.”

Liebenberg also gave the residents to contest the planting of trees on their sidewalk, as he understands how sensitive people can be with their pavements, him included.

“When planting the trees, a note was attached with my contact details and letting people know why we had planted the tree, and also giving them the option of us removing it if they didn’t want a tree on their pavement. Out of 100 trees, I was asked to move only one”

Linden residents can expect more from the Green Linden Campaign.
