Shavathon at Cresta

Public shows support for people fighting cancer and cancer survivors.

The Cancer Association of South Africa (Cansa) hosted its 11th annual Shavathon on 1 March at various shopping centres around the country.

Cresta shopping centre did not miss out as 606 people shaved, sprayed their hair or donated their ponytails to show support for cancer survivors and people fighting cancer.

“As a cancer survivor it’s amazing to see people supporting survivors and people with cancer,” said lead volunteer Lisa Gough Palmer.

“It is good to support one another,” said Lions rugby player Anthony Volmink who was spraying hair. “It is not easy when people suffer so it is good to support them.”

Fontainebleau resident Andre Olivier had his head shaved specifically for his cousin. “My cousin has cancer and is 37,” he said. “He is in a critical condition. I am doing this for him.”

Swimmer Natalie du Toit, Radio DJ Mark Pilgrim, actress Hayley Owen and musician Connell Cruise were also in attendance.

Proceeds from the Shavathon will fund Cansa care and support programmes. Cansa CEO Sue Janse van Rensburg said contributions made at Shavathon events were valuable. “It mainly helps to support cancer patients who need it the most,” she said.

Cansa is a non-profit organisation with the purpose to “lead the fight against cancer in South Africa”. Its mission is “to be the preferred non-profit organisation that enables research, educates the public and provides support to all people affected by cancer”.

According to Gough Palmer, if people still wanted to get involved in future Cansa programmes or donate money, they should contact the association directly by phoning them or visiting its website.
