Local grocer helps church group

BLACKHEATH - Steve Spar extend a helping hand to a group of young men in need.

Steve’s Spar in Blackheath has raised the bar in community outreach.

Not only have they contributed to various projects in their immediate neighbourhood, but now they have widened their impact so that men from the Shekinah Fellowship in Kempton Park will be able attend an overnight men’s conference.

Northcliff resident Warren Vertuin is a member of the church and explained how Steve’s Spar came on board.

“The majority of the guys are from Tembisa and are either unemployed, studying or working but battling to make ends meet and cannot afford the R800 per person for the trip,” he said. “So I started looking around for donations to make it easier to take everyone along with us. I approached many places and had no luck then decided to call manager Nick Savvides at Steve’s Spar where my wife and I shop on almost a daily basis.”

According to Vertuin, Savvides did not hesitate. “I kid you not, before I could even explain my situation to Nick he agreed to assist us and asked me to give him a letter stating what we need, which I took to him the same day,” he said.

“A few days later he saw my wife and I shopping and said that he would definitely assist us. ”

Savvides, on behalf of Steve’s Spar, donated 25 braai packs plus rolls for the overnight trip.

“Our church really appreciates the gesture and trusts that God will take their business from strength to strength,” said Vertuin.
