Safely dispose of flourescent lights and batteries
Pikitup urge residents to think twice before they dispose old bulbs and batteries.
Fluorescent light bulbs and batteries play a vital role in our modern day to day existence.
But how do we dispose of these items once they have reached their lifespan?
These items contain mercury, lead and sulphuric acid and exposure to any of these can have a negative impact on a persons health. Mercury poisoning can be deadly because exposure can cause damage to the lungs, kidney and the brain.
According to Eskom, energy saving bulbs last longer than ordinary bulbs and contain less mercury. Used bulbs and batteries need to be dropped off at a hazardous waste site for recycling.
Pikitup warned that hazardous waste should not be dumped at landfill sites as it could contaminate the ground water. The entity has a storage facility especially for hazardous waste and is situated at the Marlboro Depot in Ninth Street. Blown bulbs and old batteries can also be disposed of at your nearest Builders Warehouse or Woolworths.
