Waldorf Strings’ swansong

EMMARENTIA - After 27 years, this folk and Celtic band calls it quits after one last show.

Fans of the folk and Celtic music band, the Waldorf String Band, should miss the ensemble’s last performance at Mark’s Park, Emmarentia this week.

“It’s our farewell performance after 27 years,” said Vocalist Rael Birns.

The evening’s line-up is also set to include three guest appearances by Andre Hattingh, Kristel Birkholtz and Kathy Raven.

“Individually, they have contributed to the band over different periods of time,” Birn explained.

The band formed in 1987 and quickly established itself as South Africa’s premier folk and celtic music band, having been compared to favourites such as the Chieftains and the Dubliners, and have made regular TV and festival appearances.

In 2004, Waldorf String Band had enormous success with their ‘Singalong Party’ CD, which took the dealers by surprise, outselling the boy bands for some time.

They started their recording career in 1990 and by 2012 had released nine CDs and three DVDs including an annual release of their ‘Spirit of Christmas’ CD featuring well-known traditional Christmas Carols. In the same year, Next Music released their last recording, Waldorf String Band – 25 & Counting.

The band consists of Rael Birns, guitar, vocals and mouth organ, John Gnodde, banjo and bocals, Iain McAlpine, fiddle and mandolin, and Jimmy Smythe, flute and vocals together with Alan Strang, guitar and vocals and Nippy Cripwell, string bass.

They will be performing at TJ’s Acoustic Music Club at 8pm on 30 January.
