At some point last year you may have logged onto Twitter or Facebook to see what others were up to. Well, you were not the only one.

Here are some astonishing social media statistics from 2013, courtesy of Memeburn.com:

– 1.19 billion people logged onto Facebook per month. To put that into perspective, the world’s most populous country, China, is home to about 1.3 billion people.

– As of October 2013, Twitter had 232 million monthly active users, gaining 15 million users in the previous three months.

– Thanks to the announcement of the new Pope last year, Twitter saw 130 000 tweets per minute. Other topics which spiked social media figures included the Boston bombing, the 2014 soccer world cup draw, and the arrival of the royal baby.

– Instagram gained a total of 150 million active users in 2013. About half of the pictures ‘instagrammed’ originate in the United States, while the second most tagged location is in Thailand.
