A Sophiatown resident elicited applause when she expressed concern over Metrobus routes that had been cancelled in her suburb.

“As we speak, no-one from where I come from knows what is happening tonight,”she said to jeering at the public meeting last Tuesday.

“All of a sudden we get letters saying the buses [that we have passes for] are cancelled because of this new Rea Vaya.”

Although the main Phase 1b route runs along Perth Road, it remains largely inaccessible to the commuters of Sophiatown because “it is too far to walk”.

She explained that in order to catch a Rea Vaya shuttle, she needed to take a trip by taxi first. She believes Rea Vaya is not a viable option.

“How can I save money on transport if it costs R8 to get to Rea Vaya?”
