Dance Studio on a roll

NORTHCLIFF - Local dance studio produces world champions.

DS Dance Studios has reason to gloat after an impressive performance throughout the year.

The studios, situated in Northcliff and Roosevelt Park, trains some of South Africa’s top dancers in styles such as Break Dance, Modern, Jazz and Freestyle

Fifteen-year-old Kalon Badenhorst emerged victorious at the World Freestyle Dance Championships held in Blackpool, England.

Badenhorst was awarded with the World Title in Freestyle and Slow Dance.

Duo Damen Botes (8) and Raul Martins (9) achieved third place after they competed against 50 other duos at the UDO Street Dance World Championships that took place in Glasgow, Scotland.

Botes, Martins and Timothy Drew represent South Africa at the IDO World Hip-Hop, Electric Boogie and Break Dance Championships in the under-15 Break Dance category.

DS Dance Studio also scooped up some awards at the American Dance Awards held in Sun City recently.

“DS Dance performed extremely well winning the sought after Title Dancer in the over-16, 12-15 years as well as the under-11 section, against hundreds of dancers,” said Caitlin Swanepoel, dance teacher and manager of the studio.

“We also won best group dance and best choreographer went to [owner] Daniel Swanepoel, for his work on Forests End. The routine highlights the devastation of deforestation and it received the highest mark in the entire seven-day competition.”

Swanepoel has high hopes for the World Championships for Modern and Jazz that will be held in Poland in December.

“We look forward to and hope to produce another World Champion in Poland.”

DS’s Shannon Weir, Stacey Woolnough and Joanne Liebenberg will compete in Poland.
