Sithole, a 26-year-old wheelchair tennis player has been nominated for the 2013 SA Sports Awards in the Sport Star of the Year category.

The 27-year old UJ tennis club member has proved to be a force to be reckoned with.

Sithole made history when he became the first African to win a Grand Slam title at the US Open last month.

“Lucas Sithole is a phenomenal athlete and has an inspiring 37 titles behind his name and is currently ranked number two in the world,” said Bianca Morkel, PR manager of Wheelchair Tennis South Africa (WTSA).

Sithole managed to remain unbeaten throughout the tournament and outplayed the world number one wheelchair tennis player David Wagner.

WTSA has appealed to the public for their support in ensuring Sithole’s efforts are rewarded.

“Please show your support and vote for Lucas Sithole, one of the nominees for the SA Sports Awards Sport Star of the Year 2013. Dial *120*8883# and follow the prompt for Lucas Sithole. Voting closes 17 November at 9:30pm and you can vote as often as you please,” Morkel advised.

The South African Sports Awards will be hosted at the Superbowl at Sun City on 17 November.
