Silly season starts soon

Safety tips

NOVEMBER heralds the silly season, when criminals get to work to ensure they too get gifts for Christmas.

And those gifts may just come out of your home if you're not careful and vigilant. Here are some tips from Security in Practice's Louis Grobler to help keep you safe this silly season:

*Bring your rubbish bin inside as soon as Pikitup has left. Besides the fact that a lot of Bins disappear after collections, it also poses a security risk in assisting thieves to scale your perimeter fencing.

*Turn off the radio in your vehicle when you are about 2 km from home so you can be more aware of your environment.

*When it gets dark, close your curtains or blinds before switching on lights in your home. Criminals, especially house robbers, will observe you for days or longer if they plan to target your home.

*Ensure that you are aware of which SAPS Station serves your area, determine where the nearest fire station closest to home is situated, as well as the location of the nearest Emergency Medical Facility or Hospital and note the telephone numbers.

*Keep the numbers handy near your land line or other visible place for quick reference and ensure they are saved on your phone or other mobile device.
