World Spine Day is observed on 16 October. To mark the occasion, chiropractic students from University of Johannesburg (UJ) spent the day at Emthonjeni Centre in Zandspruit to create awareness and knowledge on the importance of the spine.

Students made a presentation to teach members of the community about sitting, standing and walking postures.

With the fun educational activities that they did with students, there was no stopping the little ones, who it seemed enjoyed the day the most. Boxes were donned by big and small and boxing matches were held, where the children stormed and bashed into students and each other abound with thrills, laughter and giggles.

Luke Schimdt, one of the students, said this was a way of giving back to the community.

“With the right knowledge, some conditions can be easily prevented and that is why we are doing this today.”

They plan to take this beyond world spine day and make their visits and talk a permanent thing in Zandspruit.

Chiropractice is the discipline which is mainly concerned with the diagnosis, treatment and management of almost all conditions that are nerve, muscle or joint related. The prime area of interest lies in the adjustment or manipulation of spinal and extremity joints to maintain a healthy body.
