It seems like the thieves or saboteurs who broke into the substation were interrupted while at work, considering the fact that no cables have been stolen, a resident who lives near the substation told NMT.
“They’ve managed to break the doors open but it doesn’t look like they got what they came for,” John Luckman said.
He worries that this incident could lead to another power surge, like the one in February.
“I have got a feeling this is sabotage, but I don’t want to suffer thousands in damages again because of an invisible perpetrator. I am sure I am not the only one who is worried about this potential disaster.”
Sophiatown police committed to send an officer to take fingerprints, but only when requested to do so by City Power.
City Power spokesperson Sydney Mphahlele confirmed that operations staff would look into the matter as soon as possible.
The problematic power box remains accessible while City Power and Sophiatown Police follow the necessary procedures.
Residents and motorists who pass through Westdene are therefore urged to keep an eye out for the perpetrators, who are expected to
make their return soon.
