Donations needed for annual charity fete

The annual Firlands Children's Home fete will take place on 31 August.

The fete has become a not to be missed event on the calendar and all proceeds go toward the home.

The fete offers a wide range of stalls selling furniture, appliances, clothing, books, jewellery, toys, sports equipment and garden equipment to name a few. Food stalls offer delicious cakes, pancakes, curry and rice, boerewors rolls and much more. All stalls are under cover.

Entertainment on stage will include a dog show and the Remax skydiving team will also add to the excitement of the day.

The home’s principal Major Eddie De Vos said, “To ensure the success of the fete we encourage residents to donate unwanted goods, baking ingredients and money for the fete stalls. The sooner we can collect these items it will be easier for our volunteers to sort them into categories. The organisers also need performers and artists to entertain the crowd.” The home falls under the umbrella of the Salvation Army, but is required to raise much of its own funds.

Once again the members of Ulysses Bike Club are on board to help at the fete. At last years fete, 28 bikers as well as some of their family members assisted on many of the stalls.

Michael Helberg of Ulysses said after last years fete, “We never realised before the fete how big this event is. The stalls covered a full soccer field and shortly after the gates opened the queue was already snaking past some of the other stalls.”

Ted Keartland, who has convened the garden stall for at least the past 16 or 17 years and is part of the organizing committee said, “This is truly a wonderful event and we hope residents will continue to support it this year.”

The home is situated at 21 11th Street in Linden.
