Deadly road for cyclists

Rustenburg Road has become unsafe for cyclists and pedestrians.

According to road users, the road that links Emmarentia and Melville needs visible restriction signage.

Melville resident George Hofmeyr uses the road when cycling and said motorists travel at very high speeds on this curvy road and pedestrians and cyclists could be knocked over.

Hofmeyr said, “It is impossible for motorists to see people when driving recklessly because the road is narrow on both sides.”

Hofmeyr, who is also a member of the Melville Management Committee, said at the committee’s meeting on 2 June it was discussed that speed bumps and speed restriction signs should be installed.

Morine Mavuso, a domestic worker who uses the road on a daily basis, said sometimes tree branches that hang above the road, as well as the rubbish on the pavement, make the pavement even narrower, forcing pedestrians to walk on the road.

“It is scary to walk alone on this road because you are not able to see who is coming on the other side.”

Ward 87 Councillor Amanda Forsythe said she has received many reports and complaints about the state of the road.

“I have visited the site myself before escalating the issue to the various City departments. City Parks has assured me that they will deal with the overgrowth affecting visibility and causing motorists to veer into the middle of the road.”

The requests for signage, repairs and traffic calming have been sent to the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) and also included in the list for the special JRA 40-day campaign in Ward 87.
