Landscape revamp

Construction at the park in Sophiatown has caused controversy amongst residents.

Two gum trees that were of sentimental value to the community were cut down at the park as part of the new revamp to uplift and develop the community. Marita Steyn who lives across the road from the park said the trees were part of the history of the community. “The trees have been part of the Sophiatown landscape for more than 80 years. They have witnessed and been part of political and social changes that most of us have only read or heard about.”

To the community the trees were a shelter from a sudden shower, shade for children to play under, couples to park and carve their initials into. During soccer practices they also provided a resting place between games.

Johannesburg City Parks spokesperson Jenny Moodley said it is working towards ensuring that the new Sophiatown XtremePark is rolled out and unveiled on former president Nelson Mandela’s birthday, 19 July. This is part of the city council’s month long celebration to mark Mandela Day. “This facility is set to become the newest landmark in the city and residents are invited to attend the unveiling.”

On 18 and 19 July, hundreds of employees, residents, media and mayors from over 30 countries will converge in the facility to lay the lawn, plant trees and install children’s playgrounds. “City Parks will erect a stage for local entertainers to showcase their talent during the two day celebrations at the park.”

According to Ward 86 councillor Steve Kotze, President Jacob Zuma is also expected to be amongst the dignitaries that will be present at the unveiling. “The youth is encouraged to come use these facilities, however I am concerned that there be no toilet facilities for visitors to use. Toilet facilities will only be built in the second phase of constriction after the park has been opened.

The community share my concern and have submitted a petition. In the petition residents ask for toilets, security and proper lighting to be included in the first phase of construction, before the unveiling.  In another petition the community demand that no other trees be cut down.”

The community is encouraged to propose names of prominent people who they feel have made an impact to Sophiatown to be commemorated at the unveiling.
