Buskaid performs to captivated audiences at the new Wits music hall

The Soweto String Ensemble performed the most technically difficult programme to date with aplomb.

The newly opened Chris Seabrooke Music Hall at Wits University was packed to the rafters when Buskaid held two concerts for music lovers in the city on April 2.

The Soweto String Ensemble was formed 25 years ago by Rosemary Nalden who envisioned township children having an avenue to channel their creative energies and talent through learning classical music. Performing to the highest international standards, the group is a shining beacon of grit and imagination that play around the world showcasing the best of what South Africa has to offer.

Performances by Bach, Felix Mendelssohn, Sergel Rachmaninoff and Nina Simone to name a few were a delight to hear with the audience enthralled and clapping loudly after each offering.

Nalden said, “This is a fabulous new venue for classical music. The acoustics, designed by Ivan Lin, are beyond world-class. But unfortunately, the venue is not yet completed and the lack of basic facilities, particularly backstage, makes it very challenging.”

“This was probably the most musically and technically challenging programme we’ve ever presented and I was extremely proud of the commitment, energy, and sheer musical talent which filled the hall on both days. Lovely audiences too which made all the difference!”

“I don’t think people here realise quite how very special Buskaid is. When we play overseas, we’re booked out months in advance!”
