GALLERY: Safety first for Greymont

ALBERTS FARM – Residents have fun while learning how to protect themselves from crime.

It was a fun and educational day for all, as residents met at Alberts Farm to learn how they can improve their safety. The National Home Security Month (NHSM) Security Awareness Day on 14 May saw security and emergency response companies meet residents of Greymont, Northcliff and surrounds, as the Friends of Alberts Farm group took to cooking delicious boerewors rolls to raise funds and awareness for its projects. Children had their faces painted while their parents learned what makes one padlock better than another, among other home security tips.

Residents of all ages thoroughly enjoyed it when ER24 paramedic Hentie Malan performed a demonstration on manikins. He showed how to treat injured patients, and keep them stable while en route to hospital. Security company, Yale challenged residents to try to break their locks with bolt cutters, which proved very hard to do.

Greymont Resident’s Forum executive committee member Martijn Vreugde said that while crime had decreased in the area, there was still a need to up the ante in safety. “We now have WhatsApp groups and a Greymont Watch, so crime has diminished but we are still in South Africa. We need to lock doors and get cameras on the property.”

Assa Abloy business development manager Hayley Elwen explained that the event was part of a build up to National Home Security Month in June, an initiative organised by Assa Abloy and Yale. The initiative will see security companies hold various safety awareness events in public places. Yale managing director, Lise Kimmings said that residents need to be aware of how they can crime-proof their homes . Kimmings and Elwen agreed that only through everyone working together, could crime be reduced in South Africa.
