Women teach women the basics

WELTEVREDEN PARK – Women's group get back to the basics in order to survive tough economical times.

The women of the Fairland Vroue Landbou Unie (VLU) is a group of women that regularly meet in order to preserve traditions taught to them by generations past as well as to teach younger women the basics of cooking, sewing, knitting and being creative.

The women have excursions where they visit interesting places, but also have workshops where they invite people to teach them a certain craft. On 15 March, Herma Raubenheimer from Deli Spices and Jaco Groot from Rembrandt Butchery came to the Weltevreden Dutch Reformed Church to teach the women about meat cuts and how to prepare it, quick, easy and on a budget. It was an interactive demonstration where the women got the chance to taste a rump roast prepared by Groot.

Raubenheimer showed the different spices, rubs and marinades that her company offers and how it would compliment the meat. The event emphasised the fact that South Africa is going through tough economic times and the meat we can afford can still be prepared in a delicious way. The newly appointed chairperson of the Fairland VLU, Susan Greyvenstein said that it has become so easy to buy products, where in the past women used to make it themselves like knitted items and certain food products.

“We want to teach women the basics as it broadens your ability as a woman,” said Greyvenstein. Cornel du Plessis the retiring chairperson said that young girls buy magazines and then want to be creative, but so many can’t even sew on a button. “We want to invite young women to join us so that we can teach them to be creative and have fun while doing so,” concluded Du Plessis.
