Pirouettes to envy

Jozi Youth Dance Company prides itself on being the first of its kind. The company boasts an array of talented dancers who just want to fulfill their passion to dance.

Founder and director of the dance company, Jayd Swart, who was a dancer herself, started the company after noticing how much talent goes unnoticed in our city. So she set out on a mission to break through the mundane and develop a dance company that would hone in on the talents of the youth, while making them become the best versions of themselves.

Swart’s intention was to one day go professional but after an injury, her hopes needed to be readjusted. With a lot of will and determination she looked towards teaching the thing she loved the most. The dance company has about 50 dancers with one of its studios based in Northcliff. Swart excitedly mentioned the plans she has for the success of her company in the course of the year. She expressed her hopes for the company are to be uniquely positioned so as to cater to the different aspects of dance that each student creatively brings to the dance floor. “This year is going to be great for the company, I can feel it,” said Swart.

“Some of our dancers have done international and national competitions, with all that success we are now looking at doing more local tours so we can engage with local talent and inspire more dancers to join,” said Swart. She went on to add that the dance company will host a show at the Roodepoort Theatre on 1 to 3 April. The show is called Nouvelle Ére, which translated means ‘a new era’. A name that bodes well with Swart, as she sees the company go beyond just being an ordinary dance company. Dancers from across the city auditioned to be part of the show and were choreographed by some of our country’s best.

Swart concluded she hopes her dancers would one day go professional as all her aims are geared towards them finding their success.
