SA and Kenyan musicians perform in Westdene

WESTDENE - Veteran actress, Kenya superstar and local jazz musicians shared a musical stage.

Veteran actress, chef, model, motivational speaker, entrepreneur and jazz musician Lucia Mthiyane entertained Westdene residents on 20 February.

The former Rythym City actress who played Rachel Phakathi in the soapie, shared the stage with the Kenyan jazz and mbaqanga musician, Simba Morri and Jeremy Franklin & The All Stars at The Bohemian.

Mthiyane entertained patrons and sang the much-loved African song titled, Nakupenda Malaika.

”It is all about singing and dancing Sophiatown music tonight, celebrating our roots,” said Mthiyane.

She said that she performed with Simba Morri in South Korea years ago.

Some of Mthiyane’s music career highlights include singing for the late Nelson Mandela, former president Thabo Mbeki as well as the president of Indonesia when visited SA.

She has also performed in musicals, theatre productions and done some television presenting work.

About her cooking career, Mthiyane also had cooking classes at Miele Kitchens around the country. She is the White Star ambassador and was once nominated as one of the chefs to conduct demonstrations for Spekko Rice throughout the country.

The multi-talented woman has also been an ambassador for Carducci Woman and Estée Lauder and gave motivational talks to women.

She was also appointed as one of the judges for Taste of Durban, which had chefs from different countries showing off their culinary skills.

The television series she has acted in include Rhythm City, Muvhango, Soul Buddys, Backstage, Mzansi, Generations, Flat 27 and also appeared in the Richard Loring stage production of Girl Talk in 1998 and in Janice Honeyman’s Little Shop of Horrors at the Civic Theatre.

In 1997 she appeared in Colin Law’s production of Blues Brothers.

In 1998 Mthiyane received the FNB Vita Nomination for Most Outstanding Performance in Musical Theatre in Kippie.
