Ruth Kellow has been bringing magic to the lives of children for five years.
Kellow founded Kinder Theatre in Emmarentia in 2012.
Today it has become a place where children visit to watch a variety of shows which include shadow theatre, marionettes, clowns, magic, comedy and juggling.
“I introduce children to a theatre lifestyle at an early stage in their lives,” she said.
Part of the theatre, is a children’s toy shop called Kinderspiel.
“I grew up loving toys and shows – that is what motivated me to establish the theatre,” said Kellow.
“I found this huge shop in Emmarentia, I divided it, built a stage, put up curtains and turned it into a theatre.”
Kellow added that once her theatre was ready, she contacted well-known puppeteer Alida van Deventer, who taught her shadow theatre.
“With Van Deventer, our first performance together was based on a story we both created called My House is too Small. The puppeteer Margaret Auerbach, whom I met about eight years ago, also used some of the stories I had translated as her story line.”
Kellow designed a portable puppet theatre called African Alphabet for puppet shows – Nogwaja goes to School and The singing African tree.
Kinder Theatre is opened twice a week, Tuesdays 3.30pm and Saturdays 10am.
Kellow is also a professional copy writer.
Eight years ago, she started making colouring books.
She also made a colouring book, Doodle-Posters, which is only available in her store.
