Gymnasts stretch the limits

The 2013 High Performance National Gymnastics Championships were held in Pinetown, KwaZulu-Natal from 22 to 24 June.

Seventeen of Visions Gymnastics Club’s gymnasts qualified to represent Gauteng on a national level. Among these were local gymnasts Bianca Mann and Bronwyn George, who both received top honours in their performances.

George was entered into the high school section of the women’s level seven national program. She did her club and province proud with a performance that gave her an all-around 13th place in a tough section.

Mann, who is the Visions Gymnastics women’s club captain, and a Northcliff High School pupil, competed in the senior olympic section.

She finished with two bronze, two silver and an all-around third. Mann was also selected to represent South Africa at the 2013 Croatia World Cup and Leverkussen Cup, but unfortunately she cannot attend these events due to her study commitments. “Matric exams must take priority now,” said Mann. She is also the official reserve for the 2013 World Championships squad.

“We are so proud of our high performance gymnasts, especially our two most senior gymnasts who set such an excellent example for the younger ones. I am privileged to be the owner of such a remarkable club and work with such dedicated gymnasts and coaches,” says club owner Adele Heine.

Michael Makings was crowned South Africa’s top male gymnast, claiming a total of eight medals along with his title. Makings and his coach Derick Scholtz were selected to represent South Africa at the 2013 World Championships in Antwerp, Belgium in September 2013.

In addition to these top performers, other gymnasts from the club excelled at the National Championships by bringing home 41 medals and three new national champions in their age groups. The club is now preparing for the next series of competitions for the younger levels beginning on the 20 July.
