Abrianah Esau shows she has what it takes, winning a gold and silver medal at the Gymnastics South Africa Nationals

Acrobatic gymnast Abrianah Esau brought gold and silver medals home after her participation at the Gymnastics South Africa Nationals.

When Abrianah Esau headed to Cape Town in September to participate in the Gymnastics South Africa Nationals she left holding on to the hope that she would do her best. Coming back home, she added to her grip two medals, which she now displays with great pride.

At the competition, the Roosevelt Park High School learner and her partner claimed the gold medal and became the national champions for level 7. Additionally, she earned a silver medal for level 8.

Back in August, the Grade 8 learner represented the Newlands-based Golden Lions Gymnastics Club at the provincial qualifiers, and there she won a gold medal in levels 7 and 8. She now readies herself to represent the country at the All African Games in Zimbabwe to be held in December.

When Abrianah was much younger it was her ability to do the splits, and her aunts participation in the Commonwealth Games in the 90s, that encouraged her parents to think gymnastics would be something great for her to do. So, she started lessons at Golden Lions in 2016. Her tenacity has seen her compete in various competitions such as: Central Gauteng, Provincial, and the SA Games. Each one teaching her one thing in particular: to never underestimate her opponent.

One of Abrianah’s top achievements so far was pulled off in 2022 when she attained the highest score across her level. It is not always perfect on the floor for this acrobatic gymnast though. She has had to overcome trials of her own, much like when she fractured her finger while preparing for one of her level 7 competitions. It is at times like these where she draws her strength, not only from within herself but from fellow gymnasts who inspire her, such as Brazilian, Rebeca Andrade, who tore her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) three times, but still managed to win a medal.

For Abrianah, training under coach Claudia Coreejes is a privilege and an honour. She said Coreejes has never stopped at trying her level best at making sure gymnasts at the club reach the top.

The world best be ready for Abrianah. She plans to compete in international competitions as a senior.
