The JMPD is taking action by increasing roadblocks across Johannesburg to deter crime and ensure safety.

Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department is ramping up roadblocks to enhance public safety and enforce compliance with traffic laws.

JMPD continues to conduct roadblocks across the city as a proactive measure to enhance public safety and enforce compliance with traffic laws.
“These roadblocks can occur in various high-traffic locations, near popular entertainment venues, and urban areas during specific events,” said JMPD Superintendent Xolani Fihla.

“Authorities set up roadblocks in response to specific incidents or events, including holidays and public gatherings, aiming to deter criminal activity and ensure adherence to safety regulations.”
He added JMPD conducted roadblocks for several reasons including crime prevention, traffic law enforcement, and checking for outstanding fines. While these measures were crucial for public safety, motorists were encouraged to understand their rights during such interactions.

He explained the protocols for conducting searches at these checkpoints. “Officers must have a reasonable belief that a crime is being committed. Drivers or passengers may voluntarily allow officers to search their vehicles.”
Fihla added in certain circumstances, officers may require a search warrant and it was essential for officers to respect the constitutional rights of individuals during these interactions. Motorists have the right to refuse a search unless officers have probable cause or a warrant.

JMPD urges drivers to remain calm, comply with instructions, and ensure they have their driver’s licences, vehicle registrations, and proof of insurance readily available when stopped at a roadblock. With increased awareness and cooperation, community members can contribute to a safer Johannesburg.
